Autism Awareness

Well as some of you may or may not know I work with Autistic children. I have only been doing it a couple of months but it has already made a greater impact on me than I thought it would. My mother has worked with special needs kids most of my life so I have been exposed to the environment from a young age. I have always had a soft spot for these children but having this job has turned me to mush.

They are so smart! It is amazing what these kids are capable of. One of my kids can't even put a sentence together verbally but can do multiplication, and his problem solving skills are amazing! My other client has a memory like you couldn't believe. Although sometimes inappropriately he can quote movies and TV shows better than anyone I have ever met. And to think when the later of the two kids started with my company he was completely without verbal skills.

With the proper therapy and care many children with autism can go on to live independent normal lives, to the point that you would not know they were autistic unless someone told you. So the next time you see a special needs kid please do not look at him or her as a less than human individual. They might be able to understand everything you are saying, but are unable to communicate back. They might even have a greater ability than yourself in certain facets.

Yeah I've always been fascinated by how our brain can mis-fire in one area but have genius-like powers in certain other "fassets". Seems like there is a silver lining even in this "bad" situation. Good to see God gave you a love and desire to work with these, often unloved kids. Good to know that there is therapy and hope of a normal life for many of these kids. What is the most challenging part about working with these kids?

Casey-
The hardest part is just having the patience to work with them. They will test you on many levels, often whenever they get the chance.
